How to Properly tow An AUTOMATIC Transmission Vehicle ( India )

In India, we are still behind when it comes to using AUTOMATIC Transmission Vehicles. There are many reasons to this. To list a few of them,
1.Reduced Fuel Economy,
2.Roads are not so good,
3.High maintenance costs,
4.Automatic Car models are expensive, etc.

But due to heavy traffic in metropolitan cities, many people are slowly moving to automatic transmission vehicles. As this trend changes over a period of time, we also need to understand that one needs to take special care in order to properly maintain these Automatic Transmission vehicles.

So today we are basically going to talk about TOWING of your Automatic transmission car in case of a breakdown.

Not many people know but towing an Automatic car Is very different than a Manual Car. Let us see in detail how it affects our car and the transmission.

1. If your car is a front wheel drive Car.
You should never ever put your car in Neutral mode and let the tow truck tow the vehicle on all four wheels as it can DAMAGE your transmission. This is because though the car is in neutral gear and the engine is disengaged from the transmission, but the transmission is not disengaged from the wheels which are still touching the road. As the wheels rotate, so will the transmission which will not be cooled because the engine is not on. The transmission gets damaged because the transmission fluid pump is not Lubrication & cooling the transmission. Your owner’s manual may state the exact distance and exact speed at which your car can be towed. For example, for 15kms not exceeding 30km/hr. The Safest way to tow the vehicle is to lift the front wheels up while towing.

2. If your car is a Rear wheel drive OR for wheel drive.
In this case the best possible way to tow you vehicle without damaging the transmission is FLAT bed towing.

The Above stated information may vary from car to car but the most important thing is to always refer your owner’s manual for clear instructions on towing OR let a professional mechanic guide you if you get stuck.

Hope this post is helpful to you and may your vehicle never require towing. But if it does, now you know how it should be done.
