Wheel Alignment Vs. Wheel Balancing
Wheel Alignment and Wheel Balancing are generally misunderstood by us and used interchangeably. Though both these things help us to have a smooth ride of our cars, both mean different things.
Wheel Alignment
Wheel Alignment is done using computerized equipment to adjust the angles of the wheels. It is important to check your wheel alignment at least once a year and if necessary correct the necessary angles. It is very important to have a proper wheel alignment for a safe ride. It also help save fuel.
There are three basic adjustments of angles
1.Camber,
2.Caster,
3.Toe.
Symptoms of wheel Alignment problems
The most basic and the most evident symptom is that your car pulls towards one side, either left or right. It can also result is abnormal tire wear.
Wheel Balancing
Some imperfections in the tire, any damage to the tire or the rim, Or simply a worn out old tire or a rim can result in your wheels being “Out of Balance”. This means that certain section of your wheel is heavier.
Generally balancing of a tire is done on a computerized machine which exactly pin points the place on the rim where some weights have to be attached. The weights help to balance out any heavy spots on the wheel. Wheel balancing should always be done when the tires are replaced or rotated.
Symptoms of wheel balancing problems
When the tires are out of balance, it results in heavy vibrations and wobbling of the steering wheel. Most of the times it happens at a particular speed Or above a particular speed. The amount of wobbling can vary depending how out of balance the tires are.
To get more life out of your tire you should always see to it that the tires are properly inflated according to the specified tire pressure mentioned in the owner’s manual or in most Indian cars it is specified on the driver side pillar of the car. Also tires should be rotated every once in a while (It is suggested that tires be rotated in cross pattern,i.e, front left goes to rear right and front right goes to rear left).
