Should I add water to my Car Battery ??

Modern vehicles rely heavily on the batteries. If the battery of your car is WEAK you may encounter the following issues in your vehicle,
1. Slow or interrupted starting of your car.
2. The car may not start altogether.
3. Battery discharge light display on the instrument panel, etc.

So we come to the main question which many of you have about your car batteries. Should we add water in our batteries at regular intervals?

For this we need to first understand that if the battery is labeled as "maintenance free," it is not designed to be opened. Manufacturers advise that water cannot be added to these batteries, they simply need to be replaced if they stop working.

Other batteries have vented caps on top which can be opened to check level of the sulfuric acid inside the battery. The water levels are generally ½ an inch from the top. Many batteries even have mentioned battery water levels on the outer body. There are 6 vents in a car battery and we need to inspect each one to see if all have same water levels. IF you feel that the level of water is less in any cell, you should only add DISTILLED water to it.

Adding regular tap water may destroy your battery as it contains minerals which can short out your battery and render it useless.

After adding water to the battery always see to it that the surface of the battery is properly wiped with a paper towel.

There are some precautions which you must take while doing battery maintenance.

1. Always wear disposable gloves and see to it that your hands do not come in contact with the battery acid as it may cause itching and rashes.

2. Wear safety glasses to insure no liquid may get into the eyes.
If any part of the skin is exposed to the battery acid, wash with running water and soap immediately.

Finally, as mentioned above, all modern cars rely very heavily on the batteries and a weak battery may result in numerous car electrical problems.

So, check your battery every now and then to make sure the battery terminal connections are clean, snug and protected from the elements. Signs of corrosion or leaks could mean that the battery is no longer operating optimally.
