Top 10 Reasons Why your Car does not run properly on CNG ( Indian Scenario)

It is very important to know that CNG is a Dry Fuel unlike petrol. Your car may not drive in the same way on CNG as it does on Petrol. Sometimes your car may run perfectly fine on petrol but would not do the same in CNG. There are a lot of reasons why this could happen.

We will Discuss the Top 10 reasons why you car won’t run properly on CNG. (In India)

1. Spark plugs.
One of the most common found reason for a car misfiring on CNG is the spark plugs. Spark plugs should be regularly checked at every service interval in a CNG vehicle and they may be cleaned or replaced as required.NGK spark plugs work good in CNG vehicles.

2. Plug Wires.
In cars having plugs wire assemblies, it is the plug wire set which often goes bad and leaks current or shorts out. Depending on the make and model of the vehicle, plug wires should generally be replaced every 20000 to 30000kms in a CNG vehicle.

3. Ignition Coils.
In many Modern cars, Ignition Coils go out OR cannot perform up to the mark in CNG vehicles. In a
CNG vehicle the ignition coil needs to work to its full potential. If the Coil becomes weak, the car may misfire on CNG.

4. Throttle Body.
Throttle Body is the place from where the car breathes in Air. It has a valve which opens and closes as we accelerate and decelerate. Sometimes too much carbon accumulation can cause the car not to run properly on CNG. Cleaning the throttle body with a good throttle body cleaner spray can fix your idling issues in CNG.

5. Air Filter.
If the Air filter is clogged, it won’t allow enough air to pass through it and the car will run rich (More fuel, less air). This will lead to more CNG consumption. In Case of a conventional CNG kit wherein the gas intake is from the throttle body itself, it leads to low idling issues.

6.Wrongly installed CNG kits.
Many a times it is observed that the newly installed CNG kits also give issues in many vehicles from day 1.In India, the technicians doing the CNG fitment and installation are generally not professionally trained. Even the smallest mistake during the fitment can make the car not run properly. Specially in case of Sequential Kits, the nozzle size etc should be perfect.

7.Leakage of CNG.
Generally leaks in the system are very minor and sometimes hard to trace. If CNG is leaking it will lead to lesser mileage or in case of sequential kits if the leakage is from the rail, the car may even stall often or idle poorly.

8.Low quality CNG.
Low Quality CNG on Filling stations may also lead to a drastic fall in the mileage you get per tank of CNG.

9.Timing related issues.
All cars are driven by either a timing belt or Chain. If the timing Is off, the car will run poorly and sometimes may not run at all on CNG.

10.Engine valve Failures.
If there are leakages in Intake or Exhaust valves, the car will perform very poorly. Valves wear out over a period of time and after certain kilometers.

There are many other reasons as well as to why the car may not run well on CNG. For some complex issues you may be required to get your car scanned with by a professional who has a dealer level Scan tool which can analyze and accurately tell you the issues in your car.
